BIOS vs UEFI: What Actually Changed

Every modern PC has replaced legacy BIOS with UEFI, but most people who casually say “BIOS” when they mean “the firmware settings screen” don’t actually know what changed underneath, or why it mattered enough to fully replace a standard that had lasted since the original IBM PC.

BIOS’s Real Limitations

  • 16-bit real mode — BIOS ran in an ancient CPU mode, severely limiting what it could address and how fast it could initialize hardware.
  • MBR’s 2.2TB partition limit — Master Boot Record partition tables simply couldn’t address drives larger than 2.2TB, an increasingly real problem as drives grew.
  • No native networking or graphics — BIOS’s text-only, keyboard-driven interface reflected 1980s hardware assumptions.
  • No built-in security model — nothing preventing malware from injecting itself into the boot chain before the OS even loads.

What UEFI Actually Adds

  • GPT (GUID Partition Table) — supports drives up to 9.4 zettabytes, and up to 128 partitions by default, versus MBR’s 4.
  • Secure Boot — cryptographically verifies each stage of the boot chain, blocking unsigned bootloaders and rootkits from loading before the OS.
  • A real execution environment — UEFI runs 32/64-bit code with proper driver support, graphical interfaces, mouse support, and even basic networking before the OS ever loads.
  • Faster boot — more efficient hardware initialization contributes meaningfully to modern fast boot times.

Checking Your Own System

# Confirm boot mode
$env:firmware_type = (Get-ComputerInfo).BiosFirmwareType
Write-Output $env:firmware_type # "Uefi" or "Legacy"

Confirm-SecureBootUEFI
# Presence of this directory confirms UEFI boot mode
ls /sys/firmware/efi && echo "Booted via UEFI" || echo "Booted via legacy BIOS"

Why This Isn’t Just Nostalgia-Bait Trivia

Secure Boot and GPT aren’t optional legacy footnotes — Windows 11 requires both, and Secure Boot specifically closes off an entire historical class of pre-boot malware (bootkits) that BIOS-era systems had no defense against whatsoever.
