Taming Windows 11 Notifications and Focus Assist

Windows 11’s notification system has genuinely useful granular controls that most users never touch beyond the basic on/off toggle, leaving them either drowning in notifications or missing important ones.

Start-Process "ms-settings:notifications"

Per-App Notification Control

Settings > System > Notifications lists every app individually, letting you disable notifications entirely for genuinely unimportant apps while keeping them for the ones that matter — far more precise than a global on/off toggle.

Focus Assist: Automatic Quiet Hours

  • Priority only — shows notifications only from apps you’ve explicitly marked as priority
  • Alarms only — silences everything except alarms, for genuine deep-focus time
  • Automatic rules — trigger Focus Assist during a scheduled time, when duplicating your display (presenting), or while gaming full-screen

The “automatically activate during full-screen gaming” rule is worth confirming is actually enabled — it’s the single most useful automatic rule for anyone who’s ever had a notification pop up mid-presentation or mid-game.
