Troubleshooting USB Device Recognition Issues on Windows

A USB device that suddenly stops being recognized is one of the most common hardware complaints, and the cause is almost always software (driver, power management), not the physical port or cable.

# List all USB devices and their status
Get-PnpDevice -Class USB | Format-Table FriendlyName, Status

# A device showing "Error" status often needs its driver reinstalled
Get-PnpDevice -Class USB | Where-Object Status -ne 'OK'

USB Selective Suspend: The Usual Culprit

Windows’ power management can selectively suspend individual USB ports to save power — occasionally causing a device to fail to “wake up” properly when needed again, especially after sleep.

Other Common Fixes

  • Uninstall the device in Device Manager and let Windows redetect it — often fixes a corrupted driver state
  • Try a different physical port to rule out actual hardware failure
  • Update the USB controller (host) driver itself, not just the peripheral device driver
