Choosing Hardware for a Dedicated VPN Router

Running a VPN directly at the router level (rather than per-device) protects every single connected device automatically — but it genuinely demands real router processing power that many consumer routers simply lack.

Why Router-Level VPN Is Genuinely Demanding

VPN encryption/decryption is genuinely computationally intensive work, and consumer router CPUs are frequently quite modest, built primarily for basic packet routing rather than genuinely heavy cryptographic processing — running a VPN at the router level can meaningfully bottleneck your real total internet throughput on underpowered router hardware not actually designed for this specific additional workload.

What to Genuinely Look For

  • AES-NI hardware acceleration — genuine dedicated hardware support for encryption specifically dramatically speeds up VPN throughput compared to relying purely on general-purpose CPU cycles alone
  • A genuinely capable, adequately powerful CPU — router firmware (OpenWrt, pfSense, or a manufacturer’s own dedicated VPN-capable firmware) benefits substantially from more raw router processing power specifically for this workload
  • Sufficient RAM — genuinely matters more when running multiple simultaneous VPN connections or additional router services alongside the VPN itself

Dedicated Hardware vs Repurposed General-Purpose Hardware

Option 1: A router explicitly marketed and rated for VPN throughput
(check the manufacturer's own stated VPN speed rating
specifically, not just its general advertised WAN speed)

Option 2: A small, dedicated mini PC or single-board computer running
pfSense/OpenWrt - genuinely more raw processing headroom
than most typical consumer router hardware, at the real
cost of somewhat more manual setup and configuration effort

Check a router’s actual, specifically stated VPN throughput rating (not just its general WAN speed rating) before purchasing specifically for this use case — manufacturers frequently, genuinely advertise these two very different numbers separately for good reason, since they can differ dramatically.
