ONNX (Open Neural Network Exchange) solves a genuinely practical problem: a model trained in one framework (PyTorch) needing to run efficiently in a completely different deployment environment (a mobile app, a web browser, an embedded device) without requiring a full, error-prone manual reimplementation.
import torch
model = MyPyTorchModel()
model.eval()
dummy_input = torch.randn(1, 3, 224, 224)
torch.onnx.export(
model, dummy_input, "model.onnx",
input_names=["input"], output_names=["output"]
)
Why This Matters
Once exported to the standardized ONNX format, the exact same model can run via ONNX Runtime on genuinely diverse targets — a mobile phone’s NPU, a web browser via WebAssembly, an embedded device, or a cloud server — often with meaningfully better inference performance than running the original PyTorch model directly, since ONNX Runtime applies target-specific graph optimizations tailored to each platform.
The Genuine Trade-off
Not every operation used in every research paper’s cutting-edge model architecture has full, complete ONNX export support — genuinely exotic or brand-new operations occasionally need manual workarounds or custom operator implementations to export correctly. For well-established, standard architectures, ONNX export is usually genuinely smooth; for the absolute research cutting edge, it can require real additional engineering effort.
