Windows Copilot integrated Microsoft’s AI assistant directly into the taskbar, giving system-level access to an LLM without opening a separate browser tab — worth understanding what it can and can’t actually do.
Win + C - opens Copilot directly from anywhere in Windows
What It Can Do at the System Level
- Change certain Windows settings directly through conversation (e.g., “turn on dark mode”)
- Summarize or explain content from an open window when given permission
- General-purpose chat, writing help, and question answering, same as the web version
What It Still Can’t Do
Despite deep taskbar integration, Copilot’s actual system control remains limited to a specific, curated set of settings — it’s not a general-purpose automation agent that can operate arbitrary applications on your behalf, at least not yet. Most of its taskbar value today is convenience (not switching context to a browser) rather than genuinely new capability beyond the web-based Copilot experience.
Data and Privacy Considerations
Conversations and any content shared with Copilot are processed in the cloud, not on-device — a different privacy model from purely local features like Recall, worth being aware of before sharing sensitive information through it.
