Windows System Restore Explained: What It Actually Saves

System Restore is frequently misunderstood as a full backup tool — it isn’t, and knowing exactly what it does and doesn’t save prevents a nasty surprise after using it.

What Restore Points Actually Save

  • System files, installed programs, registry settings, and drivers
  • NOT your personal files (documents, photos) — those are untouched either way
# Create a restore point manually before a risky change
Checkpoint-Computer -Description "Before driver update" -RestorePointType "MODIFY_SETTINGS"

# List existing restore points
Get-ComputerRestorePoint

# Restore to a specific point (requires restart)
Restore-Computer -RestorePoint 5

Why It’s Off by Default on Some Drives

System Restore needs dedicated disk space to store change snapshots, and on space-constrained SSDs Microsoft sometimes disables it by default — worth checking it’s actually enabled (Settings > System > About > System protection) before you actually need it, since discovering it was off during an emergency is far too late.
