Setting Up a VPN Client Connection on Windows

Windows has a built-in VPN client capable of connecting to most standard corporate and personal VPN configurations without installing any third-party software.

# Create a VPN connection via PowerShell (IKEv2 example)
Add-VpnConnection -Name "Work VPN" -ServerAddress "vpn.example.com"

-TunnelType Ikev2 -EncryptionLevel Required -AuthenticationMethod Eap

 -RememberCredential

# Connect to it
rasdial "Work VPN"

# Or check status of existing connections
Get-VpnConnection

Split Tunneling

# By default all traffic routes through the VPN.
# Enable split tunneling so only traffic destined for the VPN's network goes through it
Set-VpnConnection -Name "Work VPN" -SplitTunneling $true

Split tunneling is worth understanding before enabling it on a work VPN — it means general internet traffic (streaming, browsing) bypasses the company network entirely, which is usually fine for performance but occasionally against a specific organization’s security policy.
